Universal Clipboard: how iPhone text pastes on a Mac
Copy on the iPhone, paste on the Mac. Here is what actually happens between the two, and when it works.
Universal Clipboard moves text in steps. Your Apple Account says the two devices belong together, Bluetooth Low Energy finds the nearby Mac, and the text itself travels over a direct Wi-Fi link. No cable, and no trip through the internet.
It comes up as an interview question. How does text you copied on an iPhone paste on a Mac with no cable? The reel covers it quickly. This is the same flow with a bit more room.
Start with the clipboard
When you copy text, it goes into the clipboard. That's just a small place to hold whatever you last copied.
The text doesn't go over the internet. It travels only between your two devices, and the rest of the flow is about how those two devices get connected.
Account, then Bluetooth
The iPhone first has to recognise the Mac. It does that through the same Apple Account. Two devices signed into the same account know they belong together.
That leaves a practical problem. How does the iPhone find the Mac in the first place?
The answer is Bluetooth Low Energy, a low-battery signal. The iPhone sends it and the nearby Mac hears it. That's the whole job of this step. In the reel's diagram the status line at this point reads "iPhone nearby, Mac hears the signal".
The text goes over Wi-Fi
The tempting answer is that the text travels over Bluetooth. It doesn't. Bluetooth only does the finding.
Once the Mac has been located, a direct Wi-Fi link opens between the two devices. The text moves across that link and lands in the Mac's clipboard. Then you paste on the MacBook with Cmd V.
The diagram reads left to right as iPhone, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi link, MacBook. While the link is open, the status line says "direct link open, text moving".
When it works
The devices need to be close to each other, they need the same Apple Account, and Handoff has to be on.
Handoff is the setting that lets your devices share work between them. If Universal Clipboard isn't doing anything, check that one first, then check you're signed into the same account on both.
If you're the person who messages every snippet to yourself on WhatsApp, turn on Handoff, keep the devices close, and try a plain copy on the iPhone and Cmd V on the Mac instead.
